Deakin University Costa Hall Geelong, VIC

Hayball was originally invited to the Deakin University Waterfront Campus to assess how signage could improve the entry to Deakin Costa Hall. Our site analysis, collaborations with Deakin University stakeholders and design vision identified a unique opportunity to provide more than a sign and transform the entry into an inclusive, accessible, and engaging experience of arriving at Costa Hall, an iconic waterfront entertainment venue seating over 1400 people.

The design revitalises a former loading dock space into a welcoming arrival, sensitively preserving the rich material qualities of existing brickwork and an exposed timber soffit. Multiple technical considerations were overcome to make this a seamless transition and to transform the permeability of the space internally and externally.
A bluestone ‘welcome mat’ draws the visitor in, leading to inclusive access via stair or lifting platform to the upper level. Integral branding, technological event promotion, seating and planting also complement the experience.

The outcome is fitting with a venue that hosts a myriad of significant events such as graduation and various performances, ensuring this important venue and arrival node is of appropriate quality whilst respecting the rich heritage, character and materiality of the campus.
