Deakin University Costa Hall Geelong, VIC

Hayball was originally invited to the Deakin University Waterfront Campus to assess how signage could improve the entry to Deakin Costa Hall. Our site analysis, design vision, and collaborative conversations with University stakeholders identified a unique opportunity to provide more than a sign and instead transform the entry into an inclusive, accessible, and engaging arrival experience for Costa Hall, an iconic waterfront entertainment venue with seating for over 1,400 people.

The design revitalises a former loading dock into a welcoming arrival, sensitively preserving the rich material qualities of existing brickwork and an exposed timber soffit. Multiple technical considerations were overcome to create a seamless transition and increase the permeability of the space both inside and out.

A bluestone ‘welcome mat’ draws visitors in, leading to inclusive access via a wide stair or lifting platform to the upper level. Integral branding, technological event promotion, seating, and planting complement the experience.

The upgrade offers a fitting arrival to a venue hosting events of significance including graduation ceremonies and public performances, enabling the outward presence and inward experience of this important venue to achieve a new level of quality whilst respecting the rich heritage, character, and materiality of the campus.
