A contemporary extension to an existing heritage cottage accommodates the changing lifestyle requirements of a Melbourne family.
The composition of old and new balances the ResCode requirement for respecting “neighbourhood character” with the family’s needs for increased space and multiple sites for living. The extension at the rear, far from the parents’ suite on the street edge, houses the teenage children’s bedrooms and study retreat. The living space and kitchen provide the nexus of family life and are positioned in between. Lining the courtyard and pool, this expansive shared zone has a wall of folding doors, which on retraction transform the living space to an oversized veranda.
