Mentone Grammar School, Keith Jones Learning Centre
- Education
The Stage 2 and 3 works at Fairfield Primary School have revitalised the school’s visible presence in the community and provided space to meet needs for forecasted growth. The existing historic school building on Langridge Street has been upgraded and outfitted for future needs while consolidating the unique positive qualities of the existing school. Working within the constraints of the heritage listed street façade, a new ramp provides equal access for all building users. Landscaped spaces have been developed to highlight outdoor play around the school’s Moreton Bay Fig tree. Internal refurbishment provides upgraded staff and student amenities and teaching spaces. A new Maintenance Yard with shed provides secure space for storage and maintenance activities.
Across the road on Wingrove Street, the new 2-storey learning building for Year 5 & 6 students brings a former brownfield site back to the community, strongly linked to the existing school. Housing 200 students in 4 learning communities of 50, a diversity of learning settings allows a variety of activities. Central specialist spaces are open and light filled, linking larger groups across each building level and providing for in-depth, active learning. General learning areas accommodate flexible groupings tailored to teaching priorities, and smaller rooms are perfect for focused collaboration and quiet activities. With an emphasis on a blended curriculum of indoor and outdoor learning, the school’s sustainability values are embodied in a rich landscape of native planting that inspires play and exploration.
