Trinity College A C C Farran Hall and Kitchens Precinct Wurundjeri Country | Parkville

The Dining Hall has long been regarded as the ‘beating heart’ of Trinity College. This historic 1880 building is central to the daily life of the residential college and plays a vital role in its traditional formalities. To accommodate the growing student cohort, Hayball was engaged to design the expansion of the Dining Hall to increase seating capacity to up to 400 people, along with associated café, servery, and kitchen facilities.

The Lower Kitchens building has been restored and re-purposed as the café, with the main kitchen and amenities relocated to the basement. The new masslam timber framed servery with associated terracotta rod shading screens is a carefully proportioned modern insertion into Sharwood Court. The timber frame compliments the traditional stone and face brick heritage buildings and opens onto a revitalised landscaped courtyard as a stage for functions and more informal gatherings.

This is a pivotal project in the overall campus masterplan connecting the earlier Dorothy Building and Junior Common Room (also designed by Hayball), with the Vatican Lawn to the east, and the Bulpadock, Chapel, Gateway Building, and residential wings to the southern end of the College.
