The Regent Apartments Fitzroy, VIC
The Regent Apartments is located on the site of the historic Regent Cinema at the crossing of iconic Johnston and Brunswick Streets. The new building seeks to capture the best of Fitzroy’s past with a refined vision of the future. Fitzroy is beloved for its eclectic streetscapes and bohemian lifestyle, and both are celebrated by the building’s architectural expression and provision of communal spaces. The architecture is conceived in three parts: a series of shopfronts inspired by the neighbourhood’s retail heritage, a podium reimagined as a series of tactile masonry blocks that speak to the surrounding heritage fine plot grain, and a refined modern lantern-like tower that floats above.
Brick, timber, and board-formed concrete offer welcome tactility at the street edges, with softness and warmth offered by coloured operable blinds and abundant planting to terraces and rooftops. Interiors and rooftop spaces have been designed by Studio Tate, with a focus on personalised private spaces and sociable shared spaces.
