Wrapping Up Five Years of GL[E]AM

24 November 2022

Authored by Hayball

We are excited to launch our GL[E]AM Archive which captures the multitude of rich conversations which have taken place over the past five years. Across 34 GL[E]AM forums, we have been exposed to the diverse voices of 85 speakers from five continents (Asia, Africa, Europe, North America, and Australasia) and nine different countries. Through dialogue and sharing, we have bridged topics across a wide range of sectors and disciplines, always coming back to the three pillars of Community, Culture and Learning.

“I enjoyed the way in this event, a somewhat abstract idea, became consolidated over the three presentations. Each providing a separate facet of the idea but together they reinforced each other.”

GL[E]AM captures the DNA of who we are as a practice, drawing from our network of leading global thinkers to address emergent issues relating to how we live, learn, work and play.  Over the years, our evolving content and format has reflected the broader world context, morphing from a physical forum (2018-2019), rapidly transitioning to a virtual forum (GL[E]AM Quarantine, 2020-2021), and ending 2022 as a hybrid series.

The constraints of the pandemic have allowed us to grow our interdisciplinary GL[E]AM network across national and international borders, exposing us to new people, new ideas, and new opportunities. We embraced the opportunity to ‘fail fast’ experimenting for the first time with hybrid technologies in our session at the Sydney Opera House, aptly aligning with our session theme, What do you do with a bold idea? Enabling Innovation.

“It was great – even though I was on Zoom, I could feel the excitement from each of the different locations. Well done!”

In 2023 we’ll be taking a break from GL[E]AM whilst we turn our attention to Hayball’s Festival of Forty (yes, it’s our birthday next year!). Meanwhile, we’d like to share our latest GL[E]AM Review which focuses on one of our most popular forum topics, play. The GL[E]AM Review: Play Edition contains a series of articles relating to how we embrace play in residential, cultural, and educational contexts and shares our processes and projects which foreground this vitally important aspect of our lives.

“As a participant from Europe, living in an increasingly adversarial culture, whilst championing a culture of sharing and caring, the acknowledgment of the traditional peoples and their land, given with genuine commitment at the beginning of every session gave me hope of the role that architecture can play in championing justice for all.”

Thank you to our GL[E]AM 2022 speakers and the GL[E]AM Team (Mitch, Fiona, Ricky, Andy, Amber, Madu, Eilish, Ruby and Gosia) who have contributed to another highly successful year bridging Culture, Community and Learning.
