Trinity College celebrated the official opening of the A C C Farran Hall and Kitchens Precinct last week with a formal dinner for over 250 alumni, supporters, and partners.
The 2020 opening of Hayball’s new student accommodation building for the College has seen increasing student numbers. While a larger space was required, the priority was retaining the aesthetics and spirit of the heritage building.
‘‘It has been an honour to continue our relationship with Trinity College – this time reimagining the dining hall which has been central to College life for more than a century. In collaboration with heritage specialists Lovell Chen, the architectural response retains as much of the original building as possible while revitalising and extending the hall to meet the evolving needs of campus life. Bold internal colour and contemporary lighting has been integrated to enrich the appreciation of the College’s significant portrait collection, while maintaining the beauty of the heritage space.’ – Sarah Buckeridge, Co-Managing Principal, Hayball
The substantial rebuild marks the fifth iteration of the Dining Hall since its completion in 1880. The original timber structure was extended using stone in 1926 to accommodate growing student numbers, forming the basis of what we see today. Further expansions in 1955 and 2011 followed, with each iteration traceable through the applied building technologies of the day.
Hayball collaborated closely with our heritage advisors Lovell Chen and a comprehensive consultant team to create the expanded dining hall, a new cafeteria with seating and barista dock, subterranean washroom facilities and state-of-the-art commercial kitchen, and a redeveloped courtyard.
Key project statistics include:
- Increase in Dining Hall capacity from 326 to 406 diners
- Increase in Dining Hall floor area from 305m² to 410m²
- New 172m² cafe with seating area
- New 100m² cafeteria space
‘To support the College’s carbon neutral targets, the broader project aspires to best practice in sustainable design: across the dining hall, new café and servery spaces, and state of the art commercial kitchen installed below ground, we’ve worked within existing fabric wherever possible while introducing innovative technologies such as MASSLAM timber framing, high-performance façades, and all-electric commercial kitchen, HVAC, and hot water systems. To us, it feels that the project offers the best of old and new in one exciting facility.’ – James Luxton, Senior Associate, Hayball
