The Switch Kensington Sydney Gadigal Country | Kensington, NSW

The Switch, Kensington is situated within the Racecourse Precinct Heritage Conservation Area, adjacent to the famous Royal Randwick Racecourse and conveniently positioned along Sydney’s new light rail network.

The development involves the re-use of an existing heritage-listed two-story Victorian semi-detached dwelling that has been converted into thoughtfully designed student accommodation tailored for the nearby University of New South Wales (UNSW). The design respects the local heritage character of the area while the landscaping celebrates, and respectfully acknowledges, a range of Aboriginal artifacts found on the site.

The upper levels feature a diverse mix of single-bed studios, twin rooms, and shared living clusters accommodating 4-6 residents. On the ground floor, expansive communal spaces—including an indoor gym, games room, lounges, study areas, and a communal kitchen—are designed to foster community and collaboration. These spaces are  centered around two lushly landscaped courtyards that offer an open-air cinema, barbecue area, and seating. Embedded into the concrete pathway at the site’s entrance, visitors are welcomed by the indigenous artwork “Walk in Good Spirit” by Murrawarri artist Joe Hurst.
