Garran Primary School Garran, ACT

In 2022 Hayball were commissioned to masterplan and design the expansion and modernisation of Garran Primary School. Once complete, the school will be able to accommodate 975 students from preschool to year 6.

New features of the transformation will include specialist learning environments, improved administration facilities, external learning and play spaces, a double gymnasium, a library with a roof garden, hard courts, green spaces, and state-of-the-art facilities for community use.

Drawing inspiration from Ngunnawal Country and Garran Primary School’s leading initiatives in sustainability, the design seeks to foster a sense of stewardship and togetherness through storytelling.

The original spelling of Canberra, Koyanberra, is derived from the Ngunnawal language for “meeting place”. Drawing from this, Hayball’s design is focused around the courtyard, as a place for bringing together the school and community. External learning and play spaces, sinuous paths, and built forms interconnect to form a series of indoor and outdoor learning spaces reinforcing the ideas of knowledge sharing and progression. The design creates zones for junior and senior learners, with clear and smooth progression between stages.

The construction of the project will be staged such that the preschool and school can remain operational throughout the duration of construction.

Construction is expected to begin in late 2024.
