Garran Primary School Garran, ACT
In 2022, Hayball was commissioned to masterplan and design the expansion and modernisation of Garran Primary School to support the school’s long-term growth and evolving educational needs. When complete, the campus will accommodate up to 975 students from preschool to Year 6.
Stage One of the redevelopment is now complete, delivering new learning environments inspired by the school’s original 1965 campus. The architecture extends Garran Primary School’s legacy of courtyard-centred learning, strengthening connections between indoor and outdoor spaces while supporting collaboration, wellbeing, and community connection.
Drawing further inspiration from Ngunnawal Country and the school’s leadership in sustainability and environmental education, the design fosters a sense of stewardship through storytelling. The original spelling of Canberra, Koyanberra — meaning “meeting place” — informed a masterplan organised around a central courtyard as a shared space for learning, yarning, and gathering.
Interconnected buildings, sinuous paths, and external learning and play spaces create a cohesive sequence of indoor and outdoor environments. Clear zones for junior and senior learners are integrated to support progression across learning stages.
Stage Two is now underway and will deliver a double gymnasium, new canteen, music and drama facilities, and expanded outdoor play areas, with completion anticipated in late 2026.
