Holy Cross Catholic Primary School Mickleham, Victoria

Hayball’s work with Holy Cross Catholic Primary School began with a masterplan for a greenfield site situated on the fringe of Melbourne. This undertaking resulted in a plan for a dynamic school environment that not only caters to academic needs but also serves the community.

Holy Cross Catholic Primary School boasts integrated covered external areas that facilitate learning in an outdoor setting, and flexibility that allows it to open up for group gatherings or close down for more intimate, smaller group settings. This adaptability caters to a variety of teaching methods and learning styles, creating a responsive and inclusive educational space.

Diversity of learning settings is a hallmark of this project, empowering students to explore and discover the environments that best suit their individual needs. Breakout spaces have been strategically incorporated to provide students who require assistance in regulating their behavior with a supportive yet connected environment, allowing them to stay engaged with their classmates. This project reflects Hayball’s commitment to shaping environments that inspire learning, encourage community interaction, and accommodate the diverse needs of students and educators alike.

Holy Cross Catholic Primary School is the subject of a pilot study Hayball is currently working on in collaboration with The University of Melbourne and Melbourne Archdiocese Catholic Schools (MACS). The team is exploring what inclusivity means to schools and unpacking how this can be translated into a physical environment. The pilot commenced with a series of workshops and consultation sessions with key stakeholders including the school’s leadership team, staff, students, their parents, and MACS occupational therapists to better understand both the school’s needs and opportunities.
