Club Armstrong Mt Duneed, Victoria

Providing function space, lounge, gymnasium, pool, tennis courts and a cafe, the residents’ club is a place for exercise, leisure, and social connection in a new suburb on a prominent site close to the Torquay surf beach.

Community, friends and family life are the focus of the planning and layout, with recreation and social interaction at the core of its design. Adopting a simple form with elegant and unpretentious characteristics, the project demonstrates a design philosophy that cross fertilises knowledge and experience from one sector to the benefit of another: we drew on our extensive experience in the education sector, especially in relation to buildings attuned to the needs of smaller, dedicated communities where scale relationships, material selections and integration within a greater masterplan are paramount.

Making a key contribution to the urbanism of the Armstrong estate, the building has been considered for its experience at different scales. The design scheme and material selection take their cue from the coastal location, and evoke relaxed resort living.
