Victoria Harbour, Docklands Docklands, Melbourne

Through our involvement in a series projects, Hayball is making a significant contribution to the urban activation of this former industrial waterside precinct. Projects include public buildings for the community and a mixed use residential building with retail spaces, involving critical application of urban design thinking to achieve energised and animated public spaces.

The Library at the Dock (with Clare Design) is the centrepiece of the precinct’s new civic heart serving the broader Docklands community. Constructed from prefabricated Cross Laminated Timber and recycled hardwood, it is Australia’s first 6-Star Green Star Public Building. The Community Hub at the Dock is home to an eclectic mix of community boating associations, family services including a maternal health care service, playgroups, and multi-purpose rooms for community hire. The unconventional mixed use of this indoor/outdoor facility activates the area around the clock. Boasting a dynamic façade and generous connections to outdoor spaces, Serrata is a residential building adding to the area’s vibrancy with a ground floor retail plaza and direct connection to a neighbouring community park.

Hayball also worked with retail specialists to produce a detailed strategic vision for future mixed use and activation opportunities.
