The project sought to support contemporary multidisciplinary approaches in Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics in a stand-alone facility. In addition, a new library, food, music and performing arts facilities were required.
The design exemplifies the cross-disciplinary nature implicit in contemporary, enquiry-based approaches and encompasses the new Enquiry Hub featuring technology, science, food and information technology facilities co-located to art and mathematics areas. The 3-story Enquiry Hub integrates with the adjacent building stock and connects arts and mathematics areas with Maker-spaces.
A major extension to the Michael Murray Performing Arts Centre added a public gallery, café and dining spaces, new library, multi-purpose areas and music and performing arts facilities.
A key feature of the campus planning has been the redefinition of learning precincts around the Westminster Square – a central feature that acts as the communal piazza and a prime focus for the campus.
“With a single bold gesture, the new development at Westminster School successfully anchors a central green space, forms a permeable edge to the main oval, and connects to and extends the impressive main theatre to the formal driveway entry.” – Jury Citation, AIA SA Architecture Awards
