Young High School Community Library Young, NSW

The new Young High School Community Library will provide the hub of a networked, distributed precinct connecting cultural, community and learning centres across the towns and villages of the Hilltops Shire in the picturesque South West Slopes region of NSW.

The larger development incorporates this new integrated school and community library as the core element of a Cultural, Community and Education Precinct. The facility will support life learning for Hilltops Shire residents by serving the educational needs of Young High School, the immediate community of Young township and the wider Hilltops region.

The integrated school-community library will incorporate shared and exclusive use arrangements for the school as well as offering a range of community facilities establishing the facility as a true ‘community hub’ for the region.

Through an urbanist approach, the design supports opportunities for community gatherings and activate the site as a civic precinct. It will also interpret the rich context of the site by responding to its Aboriginal and European heritage.

The case study presented by David Tordoff (Hayball) and Dr Julia Atkin (Learning by Design), explains the design and engagement process with the stakeholders.
