The Scientia Terrace North Sydney, NSW

The Scientia Terrace is a state-of-the-art social enterprise, sports, innovation, and science facility showcasing advanced learning technologies which both challenge and inspire students.

The six-story building is part of a visionary 50-year masterplan Hayball began working on with Monte Sant’ Angelo Mercy College in 2018. This masterplan prioritises the need for contemporary STEM facilities while recognising the deep layers of history on the heritage-listed site and the legacy of the founding Sisters of Mercy.

The design was determined through a process of co-creation with school leadership, teachers, students, parents, alumni and the facade was designed in response to the historic context of the Mercy Hall and chapel buildings.  Hayball, Dr Julia Atkin and school staff undertook extensive workshopping to explore how science teaching and learning might evolve in the future.

The new building houses a series of learning settings – from large and open laboratories to smaller independent labs and seminar spaces – that concurrently facilitate modern collaborative learning and traditional teacher-directed instruction. High levels of transparency between spaces also enable more opportunities for engagement and cross-over between discrete disciplines.

“Scientia Terrace brightens our learning community as a dynamic learning haven; a place where people can thrive through collective creativity. The centre acts as lungs to the campus, energising and supporting us into the future to always explore with passion, work tenaciously with others and accomplish remarkable things.” – Allyson Mascarenhas, Deputy Principal Curriculum
