Tirriwirri SSP Queanbeyan, NSW

Tirriwirri School is a new specialist needs school within an existing learning precinct that has been designed to accommodate up to 50 students with moderate to high intellectual and physical needs. The school is a much needed addition to the precinct that will provide quality learning environment for students in the area that require specialist support.

Through a program of extensive stakeholder briefings, we were able to focus the design of the facility on the specific needs of the likely student cohort. The school will provide spaces for learning, life skills, therapy and future employment training opportunities in the school run Café and Horticulture garden. The building design offers seven distinct yet flexible learning spaces encircling a vibrant ‘Hub’ building that reimagines the traditional school Library, Hall and Kitchen into a single facility focused on career development and celebrating the accomplishments of Tirriwirri students. The Café, which is planned to open to the public throughout the week provides an opportunity for students to gain real-life employment skills, while encouraging the public to engage with the achievements of the school. The master planning, design and form of the project have all been considered to create a welcoming and inclusive environment for all learners and educators, incorporating internal and external materiality that has been selected specifically to provide positive sensory experiences, and enable learning to occur anywhere throughout the school.
